Mary Joan Foley Measom, of Aurora, Colo., passed away surrounded by family on Jan. 30,
2019. Mary was born in New York City on Oct. 5, 1933 to parents Joanna M. Byrne Foley and
Peter J. Foley, formerly of Co. Wicklow, Ireland.

Mary was raised in the Bronx with her four younger siblings: Joan J. Foley, Sheila A. Foley
Cunningham Crane, Eileen M. Foley, and Peter J. Foley Jr. Mary and her family attended Our
Lady of Refuge Church, with Mary graduating from Our Lady of Refuge Grammar School in
1947. After graduating from Aquinas High School in 1951 Mary was part of the inaugural
class at St. Clare’s School of Nursing in Manhattan where she graduated in 1954 with top
honors, and a special commendation from Cardinal Francis Spellman. Mary worked as a
Registered Nurse in the delivery room at St. Clare’s Hospital.

Mary, often called Mae, married Edmund “Ted” F. Measom Jr. on May 10, 1958 at Our Lady
of Refuge Church in the Bronx. The couple moved to Mt. Holly, N.J. and later Milford, Conn.
where they raised their five children. Mary was a faithful friend to neighbors and active in
the community, serving as a coach to her daughters’ softball team, the Exxon Girls. Coach
Donna Radecki recalled becoming good friends with Mary, who famously cheered on the
girls without necessarily knowing all the ins-and-out of the game.

Long-time neighbor Penny Oliver said, “Mary had a wisdom way ahead of her time. I
remember when other neighbors failed to step up to the plate when we had a family crisis,
Mary came in and took over like a staff sergeant. Mary was the champion of the
underdog, detesting anyone who judged others or was biased. She was not only a
pioneering ‘women’s libber,’ but also a ‘people’s libber,’ I truly missed her when she moved

While raising her children and working full-time Mary earned her Bachelor degree in Social
Work from Southern Connecticut State University in 1979. She earned her Master Degree
from Antioch New England Graduate School in 1986, and worked at Connecticut Mental
Health Center at Yale University Hospital, in New Haven, Conn. before relocating to San
Diego, Calif. in 1987. Mary continued her professional career until retiring in 2005, when she
moved to The Villages, Fla. near her sister Sheila. Most recently, Mary resided in Aurora,
Colo., near her oldest daughter, Laura.

Mary was an extraordinary friend, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, mentor, and teacher
of all things important in life. She shared her knowledge, strength and wisdom as easily as
her joyous laugh and wonderfully hilarious stories. She had a great joy for life, immersing
herself in travel and many life adventures. No matter the circumstances, Mary was rarely
spotted without a book in hand – and an easy smile for others.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, sisters Joan Foley and Sheila Crane, and former
husband Ted Measom.

Mary is survived by her sister Eileen Foley; her brother Peter Foley and his wife Kay; her
children and their partners: Edmund Measom III and Terri Miller, of Winter Park, Fla.;
Christopher Measom and Tim Shaner, of New York, N.Y.; Laura Measom Martinez and Albert
Martinez, of Highland Ranch, Colo.; Jeanne Measom and Guy Stevens (Creech), of Dublin,
Ireland; Paul Measom and Marie Mayhew, of San Francisco, Calif.; grand-children: Alannah,
Finn, Tighe, Charlie, Jude, Rowan, and Julia; her nieces and nephew: Joanne Foster,
Elizabeth Cunningham, Jennifer Cunningham, Rachel Cunningham, Sheila Parks, Maureen
Hunter, and Peter Foley; five great grand-nephews and three great grand-nieces: Pierce
Hunter, Conor Ryan, Amanda Hunter, Siena Hunter, Dylan Parks, Liam Parks, Tanner Foley,
and Karlise Foley; as well as more friends than there are stars in the sky.

I only had the short pleasure of knowing Mary for a short time. She was an amazing woman who always put a smile on my face. I loved how spunky she was. She really told you how it was. We are extremely sad that she is gone and we send our love and prayers. If there is anything we can do please let us know.

A beautiful tribute to your mother, Mary. Her family and friends are so lucky to have had her in their lives.
Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed, and very dear.

We are very sad to hear Mary has passed. Although we did not know her very well it is obvious she was a gentle and compassionate person. The proof of this in our eyes is the character of Chris who we do know. You honor your Mother with your intelligence, empathy and curiosity. Mom's are never really gone, they are us every day and every way.
Thinking of all of you,
Bill & Cindy Shaner
